From the President:
Happy Independence Week! I hope everyone is surviving the summer and thriving with their creative endeavors. With the help of the MWG board members, and those who joined us, we had a successful Drink N Scrawl last month at Mellow Mushroom. Be sure to check out the blog post featuring a poem by Mavis Jarrell if you missed it. http://www.mobilewritersguild.com/2011/06/21/drink-n-scrawl-a-mellow-writing-event/
Look forward to seeing you in the days ahead!
Carrie Cox
2011-2012 MWG President
Upcoming Events:
Our next Drink N Scrawl will be on July 23 from 3-5 PM at the Oakleigh grounds in the historic district of Mobile. We will gather at the Cox-Deasy House located on the north side of the Oakleigh Mansion. There is a covered porch and shaded gardens to hopefully help us beat most of the heat. MWG will be providing cold drinks and light appetizers. You are welcome to bring your own folding chairs, hand-held fans, and other items to keep yourself cool and comfortable. Be sure to watch our blog this month for more information.
The final Drink N Scrawl of the year will be held August 20 at the Bluegill Restaurant on the causeway. Each individual will be in charge of purchasing their own food/drinks. The time will be announced in the next issue of The Write Stuff.
Our First Meeting of the 2011-2012 season will be September 1, 2011 at the West Regional Library at 6 PM. Established and aspiring writers in the Mobile area are welcome. Times are tough and budgets tight, so please plan now to pay the $15 dues. We will be meeting the first Thursday of each month from September-May.
Spring Workshop news! Last week we announced our guest speaker for the annual workshop, to be held on March 3, 2012. Be sure to read about the two-part event and Léna Roy here. http://www.mobilewritersguild.com/2011/06/28/spring-workshop-introducing-lena-roy/
MWG Needs:
Updates!
- Are you knowledgeable about the literary history of Mobile? We need your wisdom—please send us an e-mail.
- Do you blog? Do you have a website? Have you been published—either online or on paper? We are in the process of updating our “Members’ Blogs” and “Member Publication” links on www.mobilewritersguild.com Be sure to email us the links, information, and the name you want it listed under so we can add it to the website.
We are still in need of helpers for these committees, as listed in the previous newsletter. Remember, most efforts can be coordinated via email and time, energy, and effort is up to you. We’d like you to choose the area you have the most interest in and that is the easiest for you to accomplish amid your busy life.
-
Open Mic Committee (Help us keep this tradition going! We need people to host/MC, coordinate the speakers, run the internet radio aspect of it, and just be the audience. Let us know if you can help in any of these areas.)
-
Web Committee (We need your IT skills. Are you able to help with trouble shooting, web radio set-up, web design, etc—then you are perfect for this committee!)
-
Refreshment Committee (This can be as simple as volunteering to bring chips and dip to onemeeting or as involved as scheduling the refreshments for the meetings held September-May. It’s up to you.)
-
Tracy Hurley Memorial Writing Contest Committee (We will need help judging the entries this November for the first annual contest for young writers. We are already receiving submissions! Details at http://www.mobilewritersguild.com/writing-contests/ )
-
Young Writers Mentoring Committee (We will be working with Metro Mobile Reading Council to help them with their Young Author events. Other opportunities are also possible.)
-
Workshop Committee (Help out with coordinating the spring workshop—which is scheduled for Saturday, March 3, 2012.)
-
Mobicon Committee (Help needed for judging the paranormal writing contest and actually working the MWG table at this Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Comic/etc convention, which is May 18-20, 2012.)
