From the President

I’m happy to report our spring workshop day went well. Léna Roy did a fabulous job with the Young Authors Roundtable to commemorate the 50th anniversary of A Wrinkle in Time and the feedback we’ve received from attendees of the “Mining Your Life for Your Fiction” session is that they enjoyed the hands-on workshop. You can read Léna’s thoughts here: http://www.lenaroy.com/2012/03/writers-fight-darkness.html

Upcoming Events:

Our next Open Mic is March 15th at Serda’s Coffee from 6-8 p.m. We can host up to 10 readers, who each have 10 minutes to read their work. To sign up, please e-mail Dee Jordan at mobiledeelight@gmail.com.

The next monthly meeting is April 5 at 6 p.m. We are hosting Alabama Poet Laureate Sue Walker in celebration of National Poetry Month. As always, our meetings are free and open to the public.

Daddy’s Girl Weekend, sponsored by Carolyn Haines, will be held April 13-15 at the Malaga Inn in downtown Mobile. The weekend celebrates Haines’ characters from her Sarah Booth Delaney Mississippi Delta mysteries. Attending authors will include reigning Big Daddy, Dean James (writing as Miranda James, he is the author of the NYT bestselling “cat in the stacks” mysteries), fantasy author and Big Daddy candidate, Anton Stout. Paranormal, mystery, horror and romance writers Deborah LeBlanc, T.R. Pearson and a host of others. An agent and editor will also be there. The conference includes sessions on writing and publishing, but also readers’ sessions where those who love books can talk about their favorite characters and books. There will also be a contest for Big Daddy and a costume evening themed around the Bones’ character, Jitty. The contest is, What Would Jitty Wear? Any outfit from the 11 Bones books is fair game. More information and registration forms can be found at www.carolynhaines.com.

From Steven Moore, President Baldwin Writers Group:

Hi everyone—

It was brought to my attention that some people were misreading the contest rules to say previous winners couldn’t enter the current Writers Contest.

The rules actually indicate that previous “entries” that have won are not eligible, but previous winners are welcome to try again.

So, I’ve updated the website with clearer rules on the subject and I’m extending the deadline to March 31.  In addition, the deadline for entry fees is April 7. That means you have one week after the entry deadline to get your payment in.

I’m very sorry for the confusion.

It wouldn’t be fair to previous winners if I didn’t give them a little extra time to get an entry in should they wish to— and hopefully this will benefit others, too.

Again, the BWG Writers Contest deadline has been extended to March 31.  That means you now have over three weeks to polish your entries.

Thanks and good luck.
