The Official Newsletter of Mobile Writers Guild

September 4, 2012

Volume 3 Issue 4

From the President:

The Mobile Writers’ Guild kicks off the 2012-2013 season in two days! I’m excited about what our new board members are bringing to the table this year. The meetings will continue to uplift and educate our members, as well as the community. The monthly meetings at the West Regional Library are always free and open to the public, so bring friends if the monthly topic is something that you think will interest them.

-Carrie Cox

2012-2013 MWG president

Upcoming Events:

Next monthly meeting is THURSDAY, September 6, in the meeting room of the West Regional Library from 6-7:30pm. Our first meeting will be a social gathering—a time to highlight the year’s events and meet new people. This year we’re going “potluck” style for refreshments. You don’t have to bring food each time, or anytime, just whenever it’s convenient for you to do so. With the money we save on food, we are able to offer monthly prizes for members this time around.

Pensters Writing Group starts their 2012-2013 meeting on September 8 in Room 11 at the University of South Alabama Fairhope campus at 111 St. James Street. Their speaker will be Kelly L. Stone, author of the “Time to Write” book series.

FILM MAKERS will sign-up at SATORI COFFEE Friday, September 14, at 7pmto make a short film for the nextMOBILE BAY FILM SCRAMBLE. See the contest area below for updated information about Film Scramble WRITING submissions.

Baldwin Writers Group’s next meeting will be September 15 at the Daphne Public Library from 10am to Noon. They will be electing new officers.

MWG Open Mic is on Thursday, September 20, at Serda’s Coffee on Royal Street. No pre-registration is required, but we suggest arriving about 5:30 to sign-up to read. We’ll do as many readings (ten minutes or less) as possible between 6-8pm

SAVE THE DATE! The annual Haunted Scavenger Hunt will be Saturday, October 27. This year we are teaming up with the professionals at Odd Normality but you will recognize several of the faces from their team—and we’re talking about the living people.

CONTEST for MWG members:

UPDATED–Mobile Bay Film Scramble 6

BE SURE TO READ THE UPDATED INFORMATION IN BOLD BELOW!

Mobile Writers Guild members will contribute one (or more) Synopsis and Logline for a short film (9 min or less.) Filmmakers will choose a synopsis based solely on the logline, and adapt their chosen synopsis into an entry for the 6th Mobile Bay Film Scramble.

Logline: a brief summary (1-3 sentences,) often providing both a synopsis of the plot, and an emotional hook to stimulate interest.

Synopsis:a summary of each major scene and descriptions of the significant characters; may even include snippets of dialogue.

For this challenge, we encourage writers to look to classic anthology programs such as Twilight Zone, the Outer Limits, or Night Gallery as a model for telling smart and brief tales of imaginary but nonetheless plausible (non-supernatural) content.Just a few examples: unusual science, utopia/dystopia, paranormal abilities, interaction with other universes/dimensions, macabre mystery, cyberpunk, etc. Film Scramble teams don’t have huge budgets (and often have no budget whatsoever!) so such limitations should be considered when writing.

Writers may submit as many synopses/loglines as they wish; with the understanding that only as many stories as we have teams will actually get made.

Stories may be rated G, PG, PG-13 or (lightly) R.

Timeline (updated from the tentative one posted last month)—

SYNOPSES AND LOGLINES NEED TO BE E-MAILED to mobilewritersguild@gmail.com no later than MIDNIGHT on Wednesday, September 12, 2012. Please mark the SUBJECT LINE “FILM SCRAMBLE” and INCLUDE ALL WRITING IN THE BODY OF THE E-MAIL. NO ATTACHMENTS.

FILM MAKERS WILL SIGN-UP at SATORI COFFEE Friday, September 14, at 7pm to make a short film for the next MOBILE BAY FILM SCRAMBLE.
These films will be screened at the CRESCENT THEATER Sept 28 and 29.

Some of these films may be used at the South Alabama Film Festival in November.
More details TBA soon.
