MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Kat Kennedy

  • Name: Kat Kennedy
  • MWG member for how many years: 1
  • Website: Tea Cakes and Whiskey www.katkennedypoetwriter.blogspot.com/
  • Books: Flamingo Funeral & Tales from the Land of Tea Cakes and Whiskey will be available at Amazon for Kindle by October.
  • Where is your favorite place to write?  I’m fortunate to have a home office, so I can close the door and work as much as I want. The trick is to unplug the social media before I get started.
  • What books inspired you as a child? As far as childhood favorites, the first book I remember reading was Heidi, my daughter’s name, and I loved Ole Yeller, my son’s name is Travis.
  • Do you have any strange rituals that help you get in the mood to work? I listen to old blues and country music. When I say old, I mean old. Jimmie Rodgers, the Singing Brakeman from the 30’s, is one of my favorites. Lefty Frizzell, Kitty Wells, Big Mama Thornton, and of course, Hank Williams.
  • If you could work with any living writer, who would it be and why? Bob Dylan. The first time I listened to Dylan I was fourteen. I remember a friend giving me a stack of Dylan records and saying, “You should listen to these.” It was enlightening. I started to question everything about the world around me.  I think it would be cool to write short stories based on his early ballads. Has anyone done that? Maybe I’ll do that some day.
  • If you could travel back in time and spy on a writer, who would it be and why? Sylvia Plath. I’d turn off the gas.

  1. Michael Kiker AKA Michael Snow says:

Kat – A publisher accepted a couple of my manuscripts, and to say I know nothing about the business is an understatement. Would love to join MWG – can you fill me in?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  2. Hi Mike, I am so sorry, but I just saw this comment. Yes, please join out group. We will have our next meeting on the first Thursday of November which is November 1st! We meet at the Mobile West Regional Library from 6:00-7:30 pm. The fee is $15.00 annually should you decide to join, and I think you will be happy in our group. We also have an open mic on the third Thursday of each month from 6:00-8:00 at Serda’s Coffee on Royal Street downtown. There is time for 10 readers, so come a little early to start signing up, or just come to listen. We will meet October 18th, Hope to see you there. And congrats on your manuscripts being accepted. Hope my delay in answering doesn’t stop you from coming. I’ve been quite ill, and haven’t even been on-line in weeks. Again, my apologies for not getting this sooner. Please introduce yourself if you come to the open mic or November meeting. Kat
